About the Holy Land
For three centuries the map of the Holy Land was one of the most printed maps in Europe. It was bound into Bibles and atlases so that readers could follow the journeys of the patriarchs, the Exodus, the conquest of Canaan and the life of Christ. The most popular form divides the land among the Twelve Tribes of Israel; others trace the forty years in the wilderness or show Jerusalem as it was believed to have looked in the time of Solomon or of Christ.
This chapel holds Holy Land maps from the woodcut age of Bünting and Quad, through the Dutch golden age of Blaeu, Hondius, Jansson and De Wit, to the French and German maps of Sanson, De l'Isle and Homann, with plans and views of Jerusalem and 19th century views of Bethlehem, Nazareth, Jericho and the Sea of Galilee.

Questions
Why are there so many maps of the Twelve Tribes?
Because the division of Canaan among the tribes in the Book of Joshua gave mapmakers a clear, colourful structure that every Bible reader recognised. It was copied, refined and reissued from the 16th to the 19th century.
Are Holy Land maps accurate?
They are as accurate as Scripture, Josephus and the travellers' reports allowed. Many early maps are oriented with east or west at the top and show places from different periods at once; that is part of their interest.
