About Rites of the World
In 1723 the Amsterdam engraver Bernard Picart and the publisher Jean Frederic Bernard began to issue Ceremonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde, which set the rites of Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and the peoples of the Americas side by side, on equal terms. It is often called a founding work of the comparative study of religion.
This chapel gathers Picart's plates with those of the travellers and costume books: Sonnerat's Hindu gods of 1806, Ferrario's ceremonies of China and India, Dutch lithographs of Islamic ritual of 1863, and the funeral rites, festivals and sacrifices of peoples from Lapland to Peru.
