About Houses of Worship
Prints of churches and temples were made for town histories, travel books and architectural studies. In Amsterdam, Commelin and Wagenaar recorded the churches, convents and synagogues of the city in the 18th century; in Dutch Ceylon, Baldaeus drew the mission churches of Jaffna; in England, the antiquaries engraved Westminster Abbey and the cathedrals monument by monument.
Beside them are the Ottoman and Seljuk mosques recorded in colour by Alexandre Raymond in 1924, the treasury of the Reiche Kapelle of the Munich Residenz in chromolithographs of 1874, reconstructions of Solomon's Temple, and the temples and monasteries of India, Siam, Burma and Japan.
