About Scripture
The illustrated Bible was the great publishing project of the Dutch Republic. Pieter Mortier's Bible of 1700 placed two engraved scenes on each plate, from the Creation to the Apocalypse; Jan Luyken's designs for the Bibles of 1743 brought a direct, human drama to the old stories. Later in the century, optical prints, made to be viewed through a lens, told the story of Joseph in colour.
The 19th century added small colour-printed Bible pictures, numbered series of religious prints for schools and homes, and the chromolithographs of the Nativity and the Passion that hung in German parlours around 1900.

What is a double-scene plate?
A plate engraved with two Bible scenes, one above the other, each with its own caption. Pieter Mortier's Bible of 1700 is the best-known example; it lets one sheet tell two episodes of a story.
What is an optical print?
A vue d'optique, a print made to be seen through a zograscope, a lens and mirror that gave the picture depth. They were brightly hand-coloured and their titles are often printed in mirror image.
