Christianity in print
Printing and the Christian image grew up together. The first European woodcuts were devotional sheets of saints, and for three centuries the Bible was one of the most illustrated books in Europe. Dutch publishers led the trade: Pieter Mortier's great Bible of about 1700 set two scenes to a plate, and Jan Luyken's designs filled the Bibles of 1743.
Here are the maps that let readers follow the Gospels, the Bible scenes themselves, devotional prints made for private prayer, the habits of the religious orders, and the churches, cathedrals and monasteries of Europe and of the Dutch overseas world.

Questions
What makes a devotional print?
A devotional print was made to be prayed with rather than read: a saint, the Virgin or the crucified Christ, often small, sold cheaply and kept in a book or pinned to a wall. Later devotional chromolithographs did the same in colour, for the home.
Are the Bible prints from actual Bibles?
Most are. Mortier's and Luyken's plates were printed for illustrated Bibles and Bible picture books; others come from Bible histories, catechisms and print series of Bible scenes.
