Antique Chromolithograph Deposition of Christ, Reiche Kapelle Munich, 1874

This striking antique chromolithograph was published in Munich in 1874 by F. X. Zettler and issued as part of the important portfolio Ausgewählte Kunstwerke aus dem Schatze der Reichen Capelle in der königlichen Residenz zu München. The publication documented the sacred treasures preserved within the Reiche Kapelle (Rich Chapel) of the Munich Residenz during the reign of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, reflecting a nineteenth-century effort to preserve and disseminate the artistic and spiritual heritage of the Bavarian royal court.

The composition depicts a sculptural representation of the Deposition of Christ from the Cross, rendered with remarkable clarity and tonal depth. The scene captures the dramatic moment as Christ’s body is carefully lowered, surrounded by attendants whose gestures convey grief, devotion, and solemn ritual. The print faithfully reproduces the sculptural qualities of the original artwork, emphasizing volume, texture, and the expressive movement of drapery and figures. Zettler’s mastery of chromolithography allows subtle modelling and nuanced coloration, creating an effect that closely resembles carved stone illuminated by soft chapel light.

Produced during a period of renewed fascination with medieval and Renaissance sacred art, the portfolio served both educational and decorative purposes, enabling collectors and scholars to study royal ecclesiastical works beyond their original architectural setting. Today, plates from this series are admired for their combination of historical documentation, devotional subject matter, and refined decorative presence. The restrained palette and balanced composition make the print particularly suitable for both classical interiors and modern minimalist spaces seeking historical depth.

The chromolithograph is offered unframed, allowing complete freedom for custom framing according to personal taste or interior design requirements. Presented individually, it forms a powerful focal point; combined with other plates from the series, it creates an impressive curated ensemble.

Condition: Good antique condition overall with age-related toning and scattered foxing mainly visible in the margins. Minor handling wear consistent with age. The printed image remains strong and well preserved.

Framing suggestions: A dark walnut, ebonized, or muted gilt frame combined with a generous ivory mat enhances the sculptural depth and reinforces the devotional character of the composition. Museum-style matting works especially well with the vertical format.
