Two views of Lima on a single sheet, original lithographs printed in tints from Mariano Felipe Paz Soldán's Atlas Geográfico del Perú, published in Paris in 1865. The upper image is lettered "Vista de la Penitenciaria de Lima" and the lower "Vista del Primer Claustro del Convento de San Francisco".
The upper view shows the penitentiary as a long, plain, stone-built block with a row of arched windows, a flag flying above it and a domed structure behind, standing alone on open ground under a pale sky. The lower view, printed in a darker tone, looks into the first cloister of the Franciscan convent. Two levels of arcades with columns, carved medallions and balustrades surround the courtyard, and a bare tree stands in the corner.
Set together, the sheet contrasts a new public institution with one of the city's colonial religious buildings. The atlas, printed in Paris by Lemercier, was the first comprehensive national atlas of Peru, combining maps, plans and views of its cities, ports and landscapes.
