Two of Lima's principal churches on a single sheet, original hand-colored lithographs from Mariano Felipe Paz Soldán's Atlas Geográfico del Perú, published in Paris in 1865, printed in tints. The upper view is lettered "Iglesia de la Merced" and the lower "Catedral de Lima".
The upper view looks up a street corner to the Merced church, a tall square tower with a domed top beside a richly carved baroque portal, with a low colonnade running along the side. The lower view faces the cathedral across the open Plaza Mayor: a long façade with a decorated central portal, flanked by two towers with domed tops, and a dome rising behind it at the left.
The cathedral stands on the site where Francisco Pizarro laid its first foundation in 1535, and like most of Lima's churches it was rebuilt several times after earthquakes. The atlas, printed in Paris by Lemercier, was the first comprehensive national atlas of Peru, combining maps, plans and views of its cities, ports and landscapes.
