Two views from Cajamarca, in northern Peru, on a single sheet, original lithographs with color from Mariano Felipe Paz Soldán's Atlas Geográfico del Perú, published in Paris in 1865. The upper view is lettered "Santa Catalina. Iglesia Matriz de Cajamarca" and the lower "Aguas Termales de Cajamarca".
The upper image shows the church façade, with sculpted tiers, arched openings and a plain white wall and gateway in front, standing in a dusty square where a few figures in dark clothing walk. Tile-roofed houses stand to either side and mountains rise behind. The lower view is a quiet landscape: the thermal springs appear as pale pools and channels spread across a green valley floor, with a few figures on the ground and rounded hills closing the horizon.
The springs near Cajamarca were known long before the Spanish arrival and are associated with the Inca Atahualpa, who was captured in the city in 1532. The atlas, printed in Paris by Lemercier, was the first comprehensive national atlas of Peru, combining maps, plans and views of its cities, ports and landscapes.
