Two of Lima's principal churches on a single sheet, original lithographs printed in sepia tints from Mariano Felipe Paz Soldán's Atlas Geográfico del Perú, published in Paris in 1865. The upper view is lettered "Iglesia de la Merced" and the lower "Catedral de Lima".
The upper view looks along a street to the corner of the Merced church, whose tall, square tower with a domed top stands beside a richly carved baroque portal, with a low colonnade at the side. The lower view faces the cathedral across the Plaza Mayor: a long façade with a decorated central portal, two towers with domed tops and another dome rising behind at the left. A few small figures cross the square.
The cathedral was founded by Francisco Pizarro in 1535 and rebuilt after earthquakes in a mix of baroque and neoclassical styles. The atlas, printed in Paris by Lemercier, was the first comprehensive national atlas of Peru, combining maps, plans and views of its cities, ports and landscapes.
