Islam in print
Few European prints treat Islam on its own terms, which makes the good ones valuable. The finest here are the architectural plates of 1924 by Alexandre Raymond: the green-tiled mosques and tombs of Bursa and Iznik, the Seljuk portals of Konya and Sivas, the mihrab of the Süleymaniye in Istanbul, drawn with an architect's precision.
Earlier engravings show the Great Mosque of Mecca with the Kaaba, the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, mosques of Cairo and Bursa, and the rituals of prayer and of the Sufi orders.

What is a mihrab?
The niche in the wall of a mosque that shows the direction of Mecca, toward which Muslims pray. It is usually the most richly decorated part of the building, and the minbar, the pulpit, stands beside it.
Who was Alexandre Raymond?
A French architect who recorded the Islamic architecture of Turkey; his plates published in 1924 show facades, portals, mihrabs, windows and ornament of the Ottoman and Seljuk mosques and tombs in colour.
