Antique Ottoman Geometric Balustrades Print, İznik Green Mosque, Raymond, 1924

This original architectural plate illustrates two remarkable pierced balustrade designs from the Yeşil-Djami (Green Mosque) and the Mohamed Tchélébi-Djami in İznik (ancient Nicaea). Published as Plate 37 in Alexandre M. Raymond's monumental folio *L'Art Islamique en Orient, IIe Partie*, the work belongs to one of the finest early twentieth-century surveys of Islamic architecture and decorative arts in Anatolia.

The sheet presents two elegant examples of Ottoman geometric latticework rendered at a scale of 1:10. The upper design consists of an intricate network of interlocking polygons and rosettes, creating a sophisticated visual rhythm through repetition and symmetry. The lower panel employs larger star formations, emphasizing the monumental character and mathematical precision that define Islamic ornamental traditions.

These marble and stone screens reflect the artistic transition from late Seljuk forms to the emerging Ottoman style. Constructed during the formative centuries of Ottoman architecture, the monuments of İznik combined structural functionality with profound symbolic meaning. Such openwork balustrades regulated light and space while embodying concepts of infinity, harmony, and divine order through geometry.

Alexandre M. Raymond carefully documented these architectural fragments during his travels throughout Turkey, preserving examples that remain invaluable to historians, architects, restorers, and collectors. His measured drawings continue to serve as authoritative references for traditional Islamic design and ornament.

The restrained palette of olive green, charcoal, and warm ivory gives the composition a timeless elegance that works exceptionally well in both classical and contemporary interiors.

This print is entirely original and dates from 1924. It is sold unframed. Any framed illustrations are shown for visual inspiration only.
