Mount Zion near Jerusalem, an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, circa 1850. The caption reads ZION bey JERUSALEM, Zion near Jerusalem.
A large complex of domed buildings with a tall slender minaret stands on the hill at the center right of the plate, behind a low wall and a row of dark trees, with further domed buildings at the right and hills faint on the horizon. At the left a man rides a camel toward a second camel and a standing figure, and a lone traveler walks the road beyond. In the foreground a group of robed and bearded men stands and sits on the rocks, two of them on a carpet with long guns.
The imprint at lower left reads Aus d. Kunstanstalt d. Bibliogr. Instituts in Hildbh. (from the art works of the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen), and at lower right Eigenthum d. Verleger. (property of the publishers). The plate number CXVIII is engraved at the top right of the image. No artist or engraver is named on the sheet.
The Hildburghausen imprint is that of Meyer's Universum, a serial collection of engraved views with descriptive text published by Joseph Meyer's Bibliographisches Institut at Hildburghausen from 1833, its plates engraved on steel. The sheet comes from a dealer's album rather than from a bound set. Christian tradition places the room of the Last Supper on Mount Zion, just outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem.
Even age toning. Handling soiling along the left and top edges. A few small foxing spots in the margin. All four corners read as present in the scan. Several larger brown marks.
