Marriage and infant ceremonies of the Mexicans, a copperplate engraving from Les Cérémonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde, engraved after designs by Bernard Picart, dated 1734 in the listing (Tome VI, plate numbered 91 at the top). Two scenes appear on one sheet.
The upper scene is lettered "Mariage des Mexicains". A couple joined by their robes stand before a priest on a stepped platform, with figures in feathered cloaks and headdresses on either side and women with children on the right. Beyond a balustrade there is a European-style town. The lower scene, "Cérémonies que les Mexicains pratiquent à l'égard de leurs Enfans", shows priests and attendants presenting infants before an enthroned idol with a shield, a basin and a chest in the foreground, and a crowd of women at the back.
The scenes are European constructions built from written accounts of Aztec customs, and they show the Mexicans in classical poses and architecture.
