Funeral ceremonies of the peoples of the Orinoco and of Brazil, a copperplate engraving of 1734 from Les Cérémonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde, engraved by Bernard Picart. Two scenes appear on one sheet.
The upper scene is lettered "Cérémonie funèbre des peuples qui habitent aux environs du fleuve Orénoque". Beside a river dotted with canoes, two men carry a wrapped body at the left, and two skeletons hang upright under the thatched roof of a hut at the right with a woman and child standing nearby. The lower scene, "Cérémonie funèbre des Bresiliens", shows mourners crouched in grief in front of a long thatched house while two men handle a body, and a man at the right sits in a hammock slung between posts.
The Orinoco flows through Venezuela and Colombia. Both scenes are European inventions built from travelers' reports, with the figures posed in the classical manner of the book.
