Mount Tabor in Galilee, an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, circa 1850. The caption reads DER BERG TABOR, Mount Tabor.
The rounded mass of Tabor rises alone above the plain at the center of the plate, with lower mountains at either side and a wide sky of drifting cloud. Groves of trees cover the middle distance. A rider on a camel and a figure on foot cross the open ground below the hill, a robed figure stands on the path between the rocks, and a group of travelers rests among the boulders at the lower left.
The engraver's credit at lower right reads E. Grünewald sc (E. Grünewald engraved it). The imprint at lower left reads Aus d. Kunstanstalt d. Bibliogr. Instituts in Hildbh (from the art works of the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen), and at lower right Eigenthum d. Verleger. (property of the publishers). The plate number IIIC is engraved at the top right of the image.
The Hildburghausen imprint is that of Meyer's Universum, a serial collection of engraved views with descriptive text published by Joseph Meyer's Bibliographisches Institut at Hildburghausen from 1833, its plates engraved on steel. The sheet comes from a dealer's album rather than from a bound set. Christian tradition places the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor.
A few small foxing spots in the margin. Corners and edges are not shown by this scan. Clean, even paper tone in the margin.
