Arimathea, also called Ramah, in Palestine, an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, circa 1850. The caption reads ARIMATHIA (sonst RAMAH) in Palæstina, Arimathea (otherwise Ramah) in Palestine.

A great rocky mountain rises under a heavy storm sky at the center of the plate, with lighter peaks beyond it at the right where the cloud breaks. The white town with a domed building lies at its foot across the middle distance. In the foreground dense trees and bushes fill the left, a clump of tall trees stands on the rise at the right, and two small figures stand on the open ground between them.

The imprint at lower left reads Aus d. Kunstanst. d. Bibliogr. Instit. in Hildbh. (from the art works of the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen), and at lower right Eigenthum d. Verleger (property of the publishers). The plate number CXXXVI is engraved at the top right of the image. No artist or engraver is named on the sheet.

The Hildburghausen imprint is that of Meyer's Universum, a serial collection of engraved views with descriptive text published by Joseph Meyer's Bibliographisches Institut at Hildburghausen from 1833, its plates engraved on steel. The sheet comes from a dealer's album rather than from a bound set. Arimathea is named in the Gospels as the home town of Joseph of Arimathea, who laid the body of Jesus in his own tomb.

Handling soiling along the right edge. A few small foxing spots in the margin. Corners and edges are not shown by this scan. Clean, even paper tone in the margin. One larger brown mark.
