This is an original antique copper engraved map with original hand coloring, published in 1823 as plate XIII of James Wyld's Geographia Sacra, or Scripture Atlas. The title, engraved in a pink panel at the upper right, reads "TRIBE of ISSACHAR".
The map is laid out in landscape format. Issachar is washed in green across the Plain of Esdraelon and the Valley of Jezreel, with Jezreel, Endor, Mount Gilboa and Bethshean or Bethshan among the places lettered. Two areas assigned to Manasseh within it are washed in pink, one around Megiddo and Taanach, the other around Endor and Mount Gilboa. Zebulun and Mount Tabor lie along the north. The Mediterranean, or Great Sea, with Mount Carmel, Dor and Caesarea, closes the sheet on the left, and the Sea of Galilee and the River Jordan run down the right. A scale of British Statute Miles sits below the title, and an explanation at the lower center keys royal cities, cities of refuge and Levitical cities.
Under the lower left corner of the border is the credit "J. Wyld del.", under the lower right corner "G. Neele Sculp.", and centered between them the imprint "Published by G. & W. B. Whittaker, 13 Ave Maria Lane, April, 1823." The plate number "XIII." is engraved sideways in the left margin, beside the upper left corner of the border, so that it stands at the upper right when the sheet is turned to its upright position in the atlas.
The map comes from Geographia Sacra, or Scripture Atlas, published in London in 1823 by G. and W. B. Whittaker, whose imprint runs along the lower margin. The engraved title page of the atlas names its author as Wyld "of the Quarter Master General's Office, Horse Guards". James Wyld the elder (1790 to 1836) was a London geographer and map publisher.
Light uneven toning, browner toward the edges. Marked handling soiling along the left, right and top edges. Foxing over much of the margin. All four corners are present. Several larger brown marks.
