This is an original antique copper engraved map with original hand coloring, published in 1823 as plate XXIV of James Wyld's Geographia Sacra, or Scripture Atlas. The engraved title reads "CANAAN Shewing the CAPTIVITIES of ISRAEL & JUDAH." The title is engraved at the upper left of the map, with a scale of British statute miles beneath it.
The map shows the land from Sidon and Damascus down to Edom, with the Great Sea on the left. Instead of routes, the captivities are shown by shading: the country east of the Jordan and Naphtali is laid in a dark gray shade marked 1, the rest of the northern kingdom in a lighter olive shade marked 2, and the Kingdom of Judah in yellow, marked 3. Over Damascus the lettering reads "carried Captive by Tiglath Pileser", and east of the Dead Sea the Moabites are noted as carried captive by Nebuchadnezzar and the Ammonites as carried into captivity by Nebuzaradan, the Babylonian general. An engraved "EXPLANATION" at the lower right describes the first and second captivities of Israel and the captivities of Judah, with references to Kings, Chronicles, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel.
Below the lower border the credit J. Wyld del. is engraved at the left and G. Neele Sculp. at the right, with the imprint between them: "Publish'd by G. & W. B. Whittaker 13 Ave Maria Lane April 1823." The plate number is engraved as XXIV. in the upper right.
The atlas was published by G. and W. B. Whittaker in London, and its engraved title page names Wyld as "of the Quarter Master General's Office, Horse Guards". James Wyld the elder (1790 to 1836) was a London geographer and map publisher.
Even age toning. Marked handling soiling along the bottom, right and top edges. Slight wear at the top right corner.
