Uppsala St Eriks Torg Cathedral View, Swedish Tinted Lithograph by A. Nay, 1877

This finely executed nineteenth-century tinted lithograph titled “Upsala. S:t Eriks torg” was drawn and lithographed by A. Nay and published in Stockholm in 1877 as part of the illustrated work Upsala, accompanied by descriptive text by S. Nordström. The composition presents a lively urban view centered on St. Erik’s Square, capturing the historic heart of Uppsala with its cathedral architecture, civic buildings, and animated street life. The twin towers of Uppsala Cathedral rise prominently above the surrounding structures, emphasizing both the architectural grandeur and the cultural significance of the site.

Nay’s lithographic style combines architectural precision with atmospheric tonal treatment. The subtle tinted colouring lends warmth and depth to the scene, creating a soft, silvery light characteristic of Scandinavian lithography from the late nineteenth century. Carefully rendered figures animate the square, with pedestrians, horse-drawn carriages, and market activity providing narrative detail that reflects everyday life in historic Uppsala. The balance between documentary accuracy and romantic atmosphere aligns with contemporary European topographical printmaking traditions, yet retains a distinctly Nordic sensibility rooted in calm composition and restrained colour.

This sheet originates from the later 1877 issue of the Upsala publication, which includes ten tinted lithographic plates rather than the twelve found in the earlier 1870 edition. This is a documented variant and should not be considered incomplete, an important bibliographic distinction appreciated by collectors. The architectural clarity, combined with its refined tonal palette, makes this lithograph particularly suitable for collectors of Scandinavian views, historic European cityscapes, or interior designers seeking elegant architectural imagery with historical depth.

Condition: Very good condition with light age-related toning and minor handling wear to the margins, consistent with nineteenth-century prints. Image area remains clean with well-preserved tonal detail.

Framing tips: A dark walnut or black-stained frame paired with an ivory or warm white museum mat enhances the architectural lines and subtle colour tones. Suitable for both classic gallery walls and contemporary Scandinavian interiors.
