A steel engraving of the Singel in Amsterdam with the great dome of the Round Lutheran Church, from Meyer's Universum.
The domed church rises above a cluster of tall gabled houses. In the foreground a canal lock with heavy timber gates holds two moored sailing barges, a lock keeper works the beam at right, and the canal runs away between tree lined quays toward a slender church spire in the distance. The sky is worked in fine ruled lines with soft cloud.
The plate is lettered "Aussicht vom Cingel in Amsterdam" (View from the Singel in Amsterdam), with "Aus der Kunstanstalt des Bibliogr. Inst. zu Hildbh." at left and "Eigenthum der Verleger" at right, and the plate number XXVIII at the upper right. The Bibliographisches Institut at Hildburghausen published the views as Meyer's Universum, and the low plate number points to one of the first volumes, issued from 1833, so the sheet is dated circa 1835.
The Round Lutheran Church was completed in 1671 and its copper dome is one of the landmarks of the Amsterdam skyline. Meyer's Universum was one of the most popular illustrated works of nineteenth century Germany.
A fine view for anyone who loves Amsterdam, it suits a hallway or study. The engraved image measures about 10 by 15.1 cm (height by width), and the margins around it carry all the original lettering, which is worth keeping visible in the mat.
Condition: Small loss or rounding to the top left corner. Minor nicks along the top and bottom edges. Light, uneven toning, slightly darker towards the edges. Foxing and several larger brown spots across much of the margin, with some staining in the upper margin. Printed image clean.
