Russian Priest and Monk, Hand-Coloured Lithograph, c.1845
Description:
This sober and atmospheric lithograph shows a Russian Orthodox priest and monk engaged in conversation. Their dark robes, crosses, and gestures reflect clerical life in 19th-century Russia and provide a contrast to the more colourful folk costumes elsewhere in the series.
Markaert’s drawing focuses on interaction and posture rather than ornament, while subtle hand colouring maintains visual restraint. The plate offers strong appeal to collectors of religious, Russian, or social history imagery.
Condition report:
General age toning with scattered foxing; image intact.
Framing tips:
Ideal in a black or dark brown frame to reinforce the tonal mood.
Technique: Hand-coloured lithograph
Maker: Markaert, Brussels, c.1845
