Western South America on one sheet, a wood-engraved composite print titled "Peru, Bolivia, Chile", published in Germany around 1855. The title is lettered at the top, and each of the eleven views has its own German caption beneath it.
The large central view, captioned "Die Cathedrale in Lima in Peru", shows the twin-towered front of the cathedral across a plaza with a fountain, carriages, horsemen and strolling figures, and a flag at the left. Ten smaller vignettes surround it: an Andean condor on a rock; the cathedral of Chuquisaca (Sucre) in Bolivia, with a fountain in the square; alpacas and llamas among mountains; mounted riders with lances; costume groups from Chile and Bolivia; a thatched conical hut; a long market square in Santiago de Chile lined with arcaded buildings; and a boat on a forested river, captioned as a journey on the Marañón.
Composite sheets of this kind introduced a country or region through its principal buildings, animals and peoples, and this one covers three countries of the Pacific coast in a single plate.
