This steel engraving shows Canterbury Cathedral seen along the street that runs past its south side, with tall timber framed and bow windowed houses on the left and a crenellated stone building on the right. The south flank of the cathedral fills the center of the view, with the pinnacled southwest tower and the richly carved south porch at left, the long run of buttressed nave and transept windows, and the great central tower known as Bell Harry rising above the roofs. Townspeople stroll in the foreground, a family group in fashionable dress at center and children playing at right, while birds wheel around the central tower under a bright, cloudy sky.

The plate is lettered "Drawn by T. M. Baynes" at lower left and "Engraved by S. Lacey" at lower right, with the title CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL, KENT. in open capitals and the imprint "Published 1837, by Geo. Virtue, 26, Ivy Lane." beneath.

Canterbury Cathedral is the mother church of the Anglican Communion and the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Founded by Saint Augustine in 597 and rebuilt after the Norman Conquest, it became one of the great pilgrimage churches of Europe after the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170. The Perpendicular nave was completed around 1400, and Bell Harry tower, finished about 1500, gives the cathedral its unmistakable silhouette.

Thomas Mann Baynes (1794 to 1876) was a London topographical artist and lithographer, and George Virtue was among the most active publishers of engraved views of British towns and counties in the 1830s, issuing them in parts for a broad middle class public. The fine steel plate allowed crisp detail in the tracery and the figures, and this impression is clean and well printed.

Condition: Good condition for its age. Bright sheet with very light toning and a few faint spots to the margins. Please review the images for further condition details.
