Chrono-Genealogical Chart of the Ante-Diluvian Patriarchs, Biblical Timeline Chart, Wilkinson 1823

This finely engraved and delicately hand-colored chrono-genealogical chart titled “Chrono-Genealogical Chart of the First Age of the World, or the Ante-Diluvian Patriarchs” was published in London in 1827 as part of Wilkinson’s Atlas Classica, a scholarly atlas devoted to sacred and classical history and geography. The chart presents a visual timeline of the early biblical patriarchs from Adam through Noah, offering a structured representation of genealogical relationships and lifespans based on scriptural chronology.

Unlike traditional geographic maps, this plate functions as an early historical infographic, combining genealogy, chronology, and narrative commentary into a visually organized system. Vertical bars represent the lifespans of biblical figures such as Adam, Seth, Enos, Methuselah, Lamech, and Noah, allowing viewers to understand overlapping generations and the temporal structure of the biblical narrative leading to the Great Flood. Explanatory text panels provide context, highlighting key events such as the development of early human civilization, religious developments, and the universal deluge.

Executed in refined copperplate engraving typical of early nineteenth-century London atlas production, the chart demonstrates clarity of design and intellectual ambition. Soft original hand coloring differentiates genealogical lines and enhances readability while maintaining visual harmony. Such educational charts were produced during a period when biblical scholarship increasingly sought to present sacred history through structured visual systems inspired by Enlightenment methods of classification and chronology.

Chronological and genealogical charts from early atlases are particularly appealing to collectors because they represent an intersection between religious study, scientific visualization, and graphic design history. This example offers both historical significance and strong decorative appeal, making it suitable for collectors of sacred cartography, biblical material, or early information graphics.

The balanced horizontal format makes this plate especially striking when framed, functioning equally well as an intellectual conversation piece or as part of a curated gallery wall of biblical maps and historical charts.

Condition report: Good overall condition for age. Light age toning and minor foxing consistent with early nineteenth-century paper. Marginal wear from atlas removal. Original hand color remains attractive and well preserved.

Framing tips: A dark walnut or warm brown frame combined with a generous ivory or off-white mat enhances the pastel coloring and emphasizes the structured graphic design, creating a refined museum-style presentation.

Technique: Copperplate engraving with original hand color
