Antique Ottoman Marble Balustrades Print, Yeşil Mosque, İznik, Alexandre Raymond, 1924

This original architectural plate illustrates two remarkable examples of pierced marble balustrades from the Yeşil Djami (Green Mosque) in İznik (ancient Nicaea), dating to 1373 to 1378. Published as Plate 36 in Alexandre M. Raymond's celebrated folio *L'Art Islamique en Orient, IIe Partie*, the work belongs to one of the most important early twentieth-century surveys of Islamic architecture and decorative arts in Anatolia.

The composition presents two finely measured studies executed at a scale of 1:100. The upper example displays a sophisticated arrangement of interlocking stars and polygons, while the lower panel introduces a monumental central rosette framed by delicate floral borders. Together, they demonstrate the extraordinary mastery of geometric design achieved during the formative years of Ottoman architecture.

Constructed during the early Ottoman period, the Green Mosque of İznik represents an important link between Seljuk artistic traditions and the emergence of a distinct Ottoman visual language. The marble screens served both practical and symbolic purposes, filtering light and air while expressing ideals of harmony, infinity, and divine order through mathematical geometry.

The intricate star patterns reveal the advanced understanding of proportion and symmetry that characterized Islamic craftsmanship. Every line contributes to a larger rhythmic composition in which repetition and variation create visual balance. The floral borders of the lower panel further demonstrate the union of geometric and vegetal ornament that became a hallmark of Ottoman decorative arts.

Alexandre M. Raymond carefully documented these architectural details during his travels throughout Turkey. His publications remain indispensable references for historians, architects, designers, and collectors interested in Islamic geometry and traditional craftsmanship.

The restrained palette of pale blue-grey and deep charcoal lends the composition a refined, almost modern appearance, making it particularly suitable for contemporary interiors while preserving its historical character.

This print is entirely original and dates from 1924. It is sold unframed. Any framed illustrations are shown for visual inspiration only.

Condition: Good original condition with age-related toning, scattered foxing, minor marginal wear, and light handling marks consistent with age. The image remains crisp and attractive with excellent preservation of the original printed colours.

Framing recommendations: The vertical composition pairs beautifully with a wide ivory museum mat and a dark walnut or ebonized frame inspired by traditional Ottoman interiors. A subtle gilt liner complements the cool blue tones. Museum glass is recommended for conservation purposes.
