Buddhism and East Asian faiths in print
Europe learned of the religions of East Asia through missionaries, the Dutch East India Company and travel books. Montanus and Picart engraved the temples and ceremonies of Japan, Nieuhof the monks of China, Symes the Buddhas and monasteries of Burma in 1800, and the French and Dutch voyages the talapoins of Siam.
The prints here show Buddhist monks and temples, Confucius, Shinto rites, funerals and festivals as the first Western observers recorded them.

What were the talapoins?
The name European travellers of the 17th and 18th centuries gave to the Buddhist monks of Siam and Burma.
