About this collection
Antique Sacred Prints presents the religious prints and maps of Bartele Gallery, a dealer in antique maps and prints in the Netherlands. Bartele Gallery is the seller of every piece on this site.
For five centuries the printing press served faith. Woodcut saints were sold to pilgrims, Bibles were illustrated plate by plate, mapmakers drew the Holy Land for every reader of Scripture, and travellers and engravers brought the temples, gods and ceremonies of the whole world to European readers.
The prints here come from those books, atlases and series. Every one is a period original, printed in its own day and often coloured by hand. The date given is the date the sheet was printed, also shown in Roman numerals. Where a date is uncertain, we say so.
Five chapels
- The Holy Land: Maps of Canaan, Palestine and the Twelve Tribes, plans and views of Jerusalem.
- Scripture: Old and New Testament scenes, from the Mortier Bible to the Victorian plates.
- Saints and Devotion: Saints, the Virgin, popes, monks and nuns, and prints for prayer.
- Houses of Worship: Churches, cathedrals, monasteries, mosques, synagogues and temples.
- Rites of the World: Ceremonies, gods and customs of the faiths of the world.
By faith
Each print is also listed under the faith or faiths it shows: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and East Asian faiths, Indigenous Americas. A faith is added only when the print shows it, never from the place alone.
